Recovered: Extra! Captain America Serial With Shield!

This is an extra before the next "Recovered" proper.
I'm not going to get into the specifics of the Republic serial from 1944, rather I want to mention the main issue I have with it.
The shield.
The lack thereof, specifically.
The serial had good old Cap with no weapon save a gun. That in and of itself would have been an issue a few years ago but with Ultimate Cap and Bucky-Cap, well it's not as big a topic.

Long story short, I fixed the problem, so enjoy!

Really enjoyed doing this one. Flash is one of my favs: Golden Age or Silver Age.

I tried some speed blur but it took away from the integrity of the original cover. I didn't try to match the poses exactly, just the idea.

This is one of my favorites, as I am a big Justice Society fan and have wanted to do this one for a long time. It took a few years to get these completed and I still change and update. Would not be at all surprised if another version of this found its way here sometime in the future.

Well, seems as good of a time as any to get the old ball rolling again here.
This next set of posts was partially inspired by the wonderful "Covered" blog. Some would say these would probably fit better in our sister blog: The Second Rule of Fight Club.
They may be right but I had fun creating these (something I have not had a lot of as of late) and wanted them firmly planted here in the Captain's quarters.

All the megos are my own customs and the design work is mine. All were inspired by a comic cover but I did not labor to make an exact recreation. Would've taken the fun out of it.
Much of the work involved was done quite some time ago, but is just now being shown to you, the receptive (I hope!) public.

Hmmm. Let's look at this closer: While a dog's brain is only one-tenth the size of a human brain, the part that controls smell is 40 times larger than in humans. A dogs sense of smell is about 1,000 to 10,000,000 times more sensitive than a humans (depending on the breed). A human has about 5 million scent glands, as compared to a dog who has anywhere from 125 million to 300 million.
So, what'dya think: you'd put your masks on and he'd freak out wondering where you went? Like a game of peek-a-boo?
He's obviously allowed access to Wayne manor in order to get the pic. Heck, he could've just wiped his butt on the Bat-Floor and it stuck.
This is why Silver Age Batman is so cool. It's not aimed at adults but neither is it aimed at sanity.

This is a Comic Book Foldee. Fold 'em so the top part connects with another bottom and hilarity ensues.
Came out in 1966, when DC was in the midst of their silver age revival of golden age characters. Not the 're-imagined' characters, I'm speaking of the original guys making a comeback. The first was the Golden Age Jay Garrick, the Flash. Lotsa trumpet blowing and ballyhoo later, the whole Justice Society of America is back on the scene. They interact with the Justice League and everyone is happy.
To get these great time-honored icons some extra exposure, DC put some of them on their swag.
In order to give the first cross-over character his just props, they gave him a great reference:
Old Flash.
Yeah, I'd scowl too Jay.

But at least you didn't get the Saturn Girl treatment:

This particular incident took place outside of the Red Skull's mountain hideout in 1943. Seems Cap had just mashed his finger on a rock or something.

Covers - All Star Comics 19 by Alex Wright

Once upon a time a long time ago, I used to be a fan of Alex Wright's artwork. Time passed and now I am merely a HUGE fan of Alex Wright's artwork! Alex himself too, actually.
I passed on some samples of his work to Roy Thomas and it resulted in a 1943 calendar for the prozine Alter Ego a few years back. He did some more work for Roy in Alter Ego but for the original hook-up, he asked me if I'd like him to do a cover for me.
I thought about it for a long time, roughly 3 seconds and said yes! I picked one of my favorite covers from the Golden Age of comics: All Star 19 from way back in 1943. Alex did more than justice to the original by Joe Gallagher and it adorns my office to the envy of all who see it.
Hope you like it as much as I do and thanks again, Alex!

SOMETIMES THE IN-JOKES ARE SO LAME THAT REALLY ARE FUNNY!
Since the time Stan the Man left Marvel, they have tried very hard to maintain (or recapture) the warm, fuzzy feeling that the small bullpen used to have. Assistant Editor's Month springs to mind.
It was fun then, now it just seems self-serving. These fellows who grew up reading comics and not so much other forms of literature are now finding themselves with jobs at the company they grew up with.
Not a good thing.
This piece is so idiotic it really becomes humorous. Photoshop has been around awhile guys, get over it.
I can't imagine how funny it might be if more people actually knew who this guy is!

Here's a nice it piece of commission artwork done by the incomparable Mike Vosburg. It's his and Ronn Foss' the Cowl. That's Ronn in his early fandom days in the inset. Mike's wonderful renditions of the human form have graced fanzines, tv, comics, and more!
His were the cover renditions you saw on HBO's Tales From the Crypt series. His work is all over the internet and soon a piece on his fanzine, Masquerader will appear at our sister site, Comic Book Fanzines: Chain Letters for Disturbed Children here.
Do yourself a favor and look him up!

At least the old silver age Superman covers had a whimsical approach in the artwork for this type of story. The bronze age was a'comin' and the art on this cover proved it was waaaaaay past time for printing up these kinds of stories.
